How listings are checked

The rebuilt directory starts with open map data, then applies conservative checks before a place is shown publicly.

Starting data

Business names, locations, categories and public contact information come from the Overture Maps places dataset. The first import was restricted to New Zealand food-and-drink businesses with a usable address and either a website or telephone number.

Website checks

A listing is included only when the business's website provides evidence for the particular location, such as the same telephone number or postcode alongside the business identity. A working brand website on its own is not enough to publish a location.

What “checked” does not mean

It is not a guarantee that a restaurant is open today, that its hours are current, or that every detail is correct. Failed or unreachable websites are held back rather than treated as proof that a business has closed.

Corrections

Businesses and diners will be able to suggest additions, corrections and closures. Missing a place is preferable to publishing a large amount of doubtful information.
